Tom Long was a wrestling coach in Rapid City for thirty-three years serving at Stevens for twenty years. Coach Long coached his teams to eight state titles (1963-65; 75-76; 80-81; 88) as well as finishing as runner-up seven times. He coached Randy Lewis to several high school records. Lewis went on to win a gold medal in the 1984 Olympic Games. Tom was inducted into the Rapid City Sports Hall of Fame in 1981. He was selected as the national high school wrestling coach in 1983. Coach Tom Long was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2001.

       

 

 

 

Lunette Birrenkott

Lunette Birrenkott coached basketball, track and field, and volleyball. During her tenure as an assistant track coach, the Raiders earned five state championships. Lunette was the head volleyball coach that earned several regional championships and berths to the state tournament. During the 1985-86 volleyball season, coach Birrenkott led the Raiders to a state championship. Lunette was named volleyball coach of the year in 1986-87 and West Region volleyball coach of the year in 1989.

 

LEMOINE TROUT

Lemoine Trout (1943-2002), Coached High School football and track and field coach in Rapid City for over thirty years. He began teaching and coaching at Stevens High School in 1982. He was the head football coach and in 1989, he became the head track coach. The Raiders Track and Field teams won several state championships under his leadership; including six consecutive girls Class AA titles. He was named Class AA girls track and field coach of the year in 2001. Lemoine was inducted into the Black Hills State University Hall of Fame in 2000 and into the Rapid City Sports/Officials Hall of Fame in 2001.

 

 

 

ROBIN LEWIS

Robin Lewis, is a 1981 graduate of Stevens High, Robin was a two-time all-around state gymnastics champion, a three-time vault state champion, and an uneven bars state champion. Robin also earned second and third place finishes on the floor exercise and balance beam. Robin set four state records in gymnastics during her high school career.

      

 

 

DAVE COLLINS

Dave Collins is a 1971 graduate of Stevens High, Dave was a four-sport athlete (football, basketball, track, baseball) In his senior year, Dave was an all-stater in football and basketball, set the 100-yard dash record (9.60), and was named Legion baseball player of the year. The California Angels drafted him in 1972. Dave had a sixteen-year career in the major leagues. During the 1979 and 1980 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, he hit .318 in 1979; and hit .303 with 94 runs scored and 79 stolen bases in 1980. Dave stayed in the major leagues as a coach from 1991-2010. Dave is known as one of the top multi-sport athletes to hail from South Dakota.

            

 

 

 

CINDY SARGENT-WILES

Cindy Sargent-Wiles is a 1979 graduate of Stevens High. She ran cross-country and track and field at Stevens. Cindy was a 3-time state cross-country champion in 1976, 1977 &1978. Cindy became a 3-time state champion, from 1977 – 1979 in the 880. She was named Rapid City High School Female Athlete of the Year in 1977 and 1979. She ran cross-country and track while attending South Dakota State University. Cindy was a member of the 1980 Women’s AIAW Division ll Cross Country Championship Team.  In 1981 and 1982, she was a member of the Women’s NCAA Division ll Cross Country Championship Teams. She was a Division ll All- American in 1981 and 1982.  She was an All-American Track and Field Athlete for the 3000 meters in 1982.  Cindy was named the Rapid City Collegiate Athlete of the Year in 1983.
